Utilization
Programs
Specialty Pharmacy Program. To be eligible for maximum benefits, specialty medications must be obtained through the preferred Specialty Pharmacy provider.
Member Pay the Difference. When choosing a brand name drug over an available generic equivalent, you pay your usual share plus the difference in cost.
Prior Authorization & Step Therapy. Before receiving coverage for some medications, your doctor will need to receive authorization from BCBSIA, and you may first need to try more clinically appropriate or cost-effective drugs.
Mail-Order Program. You may receive up to a 90-day supply for prescription drugs through the mail-order program or at select retail pharmacies, depending on your prescription drug benefit.
Where Your Savings Sit: The Account Side
The insurance side is only half of HSA health insurance in Iowa; the account itself lives at a bank or credit union of your choice. Compare providers on fees, the interest rate or APY (annual percentage yield) paid on your balance, any minimum balance rules, and easy access features like a debit card and online transfers from your checking account. Funds roll over every year, earnings grow untouched, and the account is portable: it follows you between jobs and into retirement. Many employers also let you fund an HSA automatically from payroll.

You contribute pre-tax dollars, the balance grows tax-free, and withdrawals for qualified medical expenses are never taxed. To open one, you must be enrolled in an approved HDHP, have no other disqualifying coverage, and not be claimed as a dependent. It is the only account with this triple advantage, which is why many Iowans treat it as a second retirement fund for healthcare costs.
Once your HDHP is active, open the account through a bank, credit union, or specialized provider, or through your employer’s payroll option. Our step-by-step setup guide walks through it.
Doctor visits, prescription drugs, dental and vision care, mental health services, and many over-the-counter items, down to a small expense like sunscreen. The IRS publishes the full list each year; see our qualified expenses guide.
The IRS caps each contribution annually: $4,400 for self-only coverage and $8,750 for family coverage, plus a $1,000 catch-up if you are 55 or older. Details in our contribution limits guide.
Withdrawals for qualified expenses are not taxed at any age. After age 65 you can also withdraw for any purpose without the 20% tax penalty, paying only ordinary income rates, similar to a traditional IRA. Consult a tax professional for your specific situation.
