Turning 65 or reviewing your Medicare coverage? We compare every major medicare supplement insurance company licensed in the state, at no cost to you.

What Is Medigap Policy?

Medicare supplement insurance, also called Medigap, is sold by private insurance companies to pay the costs that Original Medicare doesn’t cover: deductibles, coinsurance, and copayments. There are 10 standardized medicare supplement insurance plans, lettered A through N, and the benefits in each plan are identical no matter which insurance company sells it. Your medigap policy works alongside Medicare Part A and Part B; Medicare pays first, your plan pays its share, and most claims process automatically with no paperwork.

Plan G High-Deductible is a variant of Plan G, not a separate plan. It covers the exact same benefits as Plan G, but you pay all costs yourself until you meet the $2,950 annual deductible (2026). After that, it pays exactly like Plan G. In exchange, the monthly premium is the lowest of the three, good for healthy enrollees who want catastrophic protection at the lowest monthly cost.

Best Medicare Supplement Plans in Iowa for 2026

Three letters cover nearly everyone:

  • Plan G: the most complete option for anyone newly eligible for Medicare. Covers everything except the small annual Part B deductible. Plan G details.
  • Plan N: lower premiums with modest copays for office and ER visits. Plan N details.
  • Plan F: the legacy full-coverage option, open only to those eligible before 2020. the legacy plan guide.

Carrier-wise, Mutual of Omaha usually offers some of the lowest rates in the state, and a Medica medicare supplement is a strong regional alternative; Wellmark and several national insurance companies round out the market. Because benefits for the same letter never change between companies, we quote them all and let the premium decide.

How Much Does Medicare Supplement Insurance Cost in Iowa?

Premiums depend on your age, gender, ZIP code, tobacco status, and the plan letter you choose, and most policies here use attained-age pricing that rises over time. The Iowa SHIIP publishes an annual premium comparison guide showing what every insurance company charges, and our quoting reaches the same data in minutes. Did you comparison-shop for the best premium when you first enrolled? If not, switching could trim hundreds per year without changing a single benefit.

When Can You Enroll?

Your Medigap open enrollment period lasts six months from the day you are age 65 or older and enrolled in Medicare Part B. During this window you have guaranteed issue rights: no insurance company can decline you, surcharge you, or impose waiting periods for health conditions. Apply outside the window and medical underwriting usually applies, so the best time to enroll in a Medicare supplement plan is the month your Part B starts. If you qualify for Medicare before 65 through disability or end-stage renal disease, ask us which carriers will offer you a policy in Iowa; options exist but vary.

Supplement or Advantage: Which Plan Is Right?

A Medicare Advantage plan replaces Original Medicare with a private network plan, often with a $0 premium and built-in extras. Medigap keeps the original program in charge: any doctor who accepts Medicare, no referrals, predictable out-of-pocket costs. Advantage suits budget-first shoppers comfortable with networks; a Medigap policy suits frequent travelers and anyone who wants every door open. We sell both, so our comparison is honest.
